JUN 5, mammalian wildlife: "selfie with bison"

Authors' NoteIt's hard to believe that there was a 'responsible driver' who let this young person out of the car to take this picture (isolated from a published video), but there you are.

In national parks in both Canada and the United States, there are fines imposed for approaching wildlife too closely, and signage usually makes this abundantly clear.

A verse, and more pictures of the American bison (buffalo), can be found on this post

JUN 4, organic brain poetry: hyperthyroid mania

Authors' Note

TSH: thyroid stimulating hormone, also known as thyrotropin, initialism for a peptide hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland in a feedback loop that regulates production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland

Hyperthyroid states in which the level of TSH is reduced include Graves' disease, subacute thyroiditis (inflammation of the gland), autonomous thyroid nodules and excessive thyroid hormone replacement. Hyperthyroidism in which the blood level of TSH is found to be elevated is extremely uncommon, related to very rare functioning tumours of the pituitary gland.

The operation of the feedback loop in relation to states of thyroid deficiency is discussed here.

JUN 1, Canadiana: Mounties (horses)

Authors' Note: Spokesperson "Miki" is a Canadian woman of Japanese extraction who is a "Mountie", common moniker for a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a name deriving from the service's early days. Horses now play only a minor role in the RCMP's primary goal, the enforcement of federal criminal law; they are still used for crowd-control maneuvers, and in public spectacles, including the well-reputed "Musical Ride". Since 1966, however, horseback riding is no longer a mandatory skill required in the training of new officers.
Under contract, the RCMP also provides policing service to eight of Canada's ten provinces (Ontario and Quebec being the exceptions), the three Canadian northern territories, and 600 indigenous communities. Under its purview are towns such as Whitehorse, Yukon, and Hay River, Northwest Territories.

You can review poems, pictures and diverse nonsense related to Canada on the post "Canadiana" on our full-service blog  "Edifying Nonsense".

MAY 30, exotic destination: Haifa, Israel (Holyland)

Authors' Note: Baha'i, sometimes known as "the youngest of the world's main religions", promotes universal brotherhood and spiritual unity. Members of the faith, like my dental hygienist, make pilgrimages to northern Israel, where there is a complex of sites including the Baha'i Gardens in Haifa, and temples in which the sect's Prophet-Herald, the Bab, and its Prophet-Founder, Baha'i-u'llah, are interred.

MAY 28, creative anachronism: heavenly host

Authors' Note: A number of religions tell of an epic battle staged in Heaven involving an army of angels that resulted in the casting out of Satan (or equivalent) and his followers. The governance, duties, activities and whereabouts of the Heavenly Host in the ensuing epoch is seldom mentioned.

The author apologizes for any apparent error in his account, but points out that he is a true disbeliever.

Along the same lines, readers are invited to review our small but growing collection of "creative anachronisms" on our blog "Edifying Nonsense" by clicking HERE.
