Authors' Note: A bone fracture produced by relatively severe force, e.g. a motor-vehicle accident, and involving several locations in the same bone, is said to be comminuted. The visualization of multiple fragments on radiographs (X-ray evaluations) of the relevant bone makes the diagnosis straightforward, and heralds the need for surgical intervention.
