b) Today's Offering (Jun 26, 2024):

Authors' Note: Hives, known medically as urticaria, is a symptomatic skin condition attributed to the release of the immune mediator histamine, and manifesting at some point in up to 20% of people. Allergy is a common underlying instigator, with drug reactions being causative in some cases. The onset, with progressive randomly distributed spread of batches of reddish raised lesions, is often acute, but the condition may be repetitive and "chronic", (i.e. on-again, off-again), as is the case with Yves' experience.

Formulation of the above poem required the use of binomial phrases, as indicated by italics.

 Re PAGES:

You, members of the audience of Daily Illustrated Nonsense, (D.I.N.), often have questions about the authors of this blog, and the purpose, history and organization of our online e-manations. To help answer these puzzlements, we have scrawled some material on the undated PAGES section of this blog. Please review these 'documents', although some remain under development. Although expansion of these explanations is contemplated, we admit to taking our time to write down what seems natural to us, but more outreach with this type of communication is planned.
So far, you can take a look at these important documents :
1) Our Blog (D.I.N.): Authors and Purpose (under construction)
2) Content of the blog, and its Historical Development
3) Distribution of Thematic Material
4) How Can I Contribute? (under construction)

JUN 25, submitted palindromes: RANDOM PILES 30

On the 25th of each month you will find a slide-filling group of palindromic phrases submitted to the editors by a panel of 7 palindromists. These folks have all been working on this project since January 2020. The personal profiles for each of these contributors are displayed in panels published here at the start of things, and then, we have asked them to provide (palindromically, of course) their views on one of the iconic items in the classic literature, starting with "A man, a plan, a canal -- Panama", continuing with other well-known phrases, such as "Dennis sinned". Otherwise, their contribution will be grouped in monthly random piles (a phrase that you might recognize as an anagram of the word p-a-l-i-n-d-r-o-m-e-s).

poetry lyrics:/ Johnny's parents, not quite reassured:/ "His woke teachers,
their zeal undeterred,/ Might use surgical toys/ To make girls
out of boys;/ We won't send him." (Home schooling's preferred).

Author's Note: The above verse admittedly panders to those believing in transphobic conspiracy theories.

JUN 23, gruesome verse: horripilation (goose bumps)

 a) Reprise of material posted on June 23 in previous years ...

2020: trees, red mulberry (illustrated poem)
2021: funny bones, prosthetic hipster (poem)
2022: non-sequitur, judge's gavel (illustrated poem)
2023: national verse, Haiti (poem)

b) Today's Offering (Jun 23, 2024):
poetry lyrics:/  Goose bumps, caused by arrector (m.) pili: / Ogling films
 with BB -- reveal thrilly;/ When you're chilled in the night,/ Heebie-jeebies from fright;/
Old friend gives you a slight ---you'll look silly.

Authors' Note: Goose bumps or goose pimples are a common transient physiological change produced by stimulation of the skin's small and widely distributed arrector pili, tiny muscles at the base of each hair follicle. Their appearance may be provoked by physical conditions (such as a cold environment) or emotional factors, including embarassment, a sexual turn-on, or fear. The latter, accompanied by profound anxiety (the heebie-jeebies), and "hair standing on end" (piloerection or horripilation) is a reaction scaled down from that found in the animal kingdom, e.g. porcupines throwing their quills to put off predators.

Heebie-jeebies is gramatically another of those appealing (re) duplications, like helter-skelter and hocus-pocus, and represents a topic appropriate for discussion on Hallowe'en.

JUN 22, pill-poppin' poetry: naloxone

a) Reprise of material posted on June 22 in previous years ...

2021: new world palindromes, #40 (wordplay map)
2022: diagnostic imaging, attenuation correction (poem)
2023: homophonous verse, bypassed glitches (poem)
poetry lyrics:/ There's an antidote med I'm advising/ For opiate users demising/
  By OD or intention./ Inject stat: death's prevention./ Naloxone's a drug
 worth apprising.

b) Today's Offering (Jun 22, 2024):

Authors' Note: The euphemistic initialism OD, for drug overdose, in the parlance of emergency health providers, most often refers to an unintentional drug overdose of narcotic street drugs (e.g. heroin), by an unscheduled user. In a somewhat different context, it may refer to a suicide attempt with a variety of oral medications, including oral opioids, e.g. fentanyl. Naloxone is an antidote molecule, directed at the brain's opioid receptors that can promptly reverse the intense depression of respiratory centres caused by this specific class of drugs. Kits are available for use of this life-saving antidote by injection, and also, more recently, as a nasal spray.

2021: patients and maladies, eye discharge (poem)
2022: doctors and practices, ophthalmologist sibling (poem)
2023: word-pairs, (re)duplications H to Ho- (wordplay lexicon)

b) Today's Offering (Jun 15, 2024):

poetic lyrics:/ Productively coughing in chorus,/ Poets Virgil, Catullus and Horace,/
Unvaxxed, all got COVID,/ As did Livy and Ovid,/ Recorded an eon before us/
Who e-mailed the skinny?/ Lucretius and Pliny.

Authors' Note: When writers distort historic timelines intentionally or inadvertently in concocting their plots, they are said to write anachronistically.
Most of the above-mentioned Roman poets have also been discussed individually elsewhere on the OEDILF site. Many of these figures have had their true Latin names altered considerably to fit our Anglo-Latin construct. Apparently, however, none of these authors adopted the limerick format in their poetry.

Along the same lines, readers are invited to review our small but growing collection of "creative anachronisms" on our blog "Edifying Nonsense" by clicking HERE.
